Two years ago our wellie wearing family moved to the rolling wet hills of Mid Wales. We decided to grow our own fruit and veg, keep bees, poultry and build our own furniture with little or no experience.

This is our journey to the good life.

The dilemna of the playroom radiator guard

After roughly 6 months of living here, we had built sheds for all our outdoor pursuits, and we were able to free up a small tiled room on the groundfloor of our house. The room was too big for a storage area which was no longer needed anyway, in the wrong part of the house to be a bedroom, and not desired as anything in particular. With our daughter coming up to a year old we decided that it would fit the role of playroom quite nicely so we proceeded to make it baby-safe; we ordered wall stickers, bought socket blockers and a door-gate and finally turned out attention to the radiator. We looked around at standard radiator covers but after doing the measurements we realised that they would all poke out higher than the windowsill under which the radiator was located would allow. With a sigh we headed off to the local builders merchants where we seem to spend an inordinate amount of time and money, to buy materials to build our own radiator cover. It was as I stared across the yard at the timber, sheds and railings that it came to me. Picket fencing! After all it was only for a kids' playroom to keep her off the radiator and we could jazz it up with flower and animal cut outs! Best of all, it was quite cheap, would be quick to rig-up and would look great!
