Two years ago our wellie wearing family moved to the rolling wet hills of Mid Wales. We decided to grow our own fruit and veg, keep bees, poultry and build our own furniture with little or no experience.

This is our journey to the good life.

Garlic

One of the mistakes I made last year was with the garlic. I hadn't planned to grow garlic last year but when I spotted some in the gardening centre last spring, I decided to give it a go and so you can imagine my pleasure when I pulled them up months later to discover that I had grown garlic bulbs! Sadly many of them were large singles and even the ones that had split into multiple cloves were only small. On a quick internet search it turns out that garlic needs to have a cold winter to encourage the bulbs to split. So this year I ordered seed garlic from the Really Garlicky Company and following their fantastic instructions, went ahead and planted them in a modules tray to start growing slowly over the winter ready for planting in the spring. Ideally I should have planted them straight in the ground but as I have to finish building my raised beds yet I put them in the trays for now. Fingers crossed for some monster garlic this year!!

This year's garlic starting out in module trays on top of the quail-house!
