Two years ago our wellie wearing family moved to the rolling wet hills of Mid Wales. We decided to grow our own fruit and veg, keep bees, poultry and build our own furniture with little or no experience.

This is our journey to the good life.

Chicken Food

Chicken Food

A few weeks after getting our rescue chickens all those years back, I spoke to a local smallholder who told me that in the winter particularly, chickens like warm chicken meal made into a mash or porridge. Ever heard of spoiling cats with better quality catfood so they refuse the old stuff? I think we have done that with our chickens. Along with all the kitchen scraps (excluding garlic, onion and poultry) I took that lady's advice and tried making instant mash, instant porridge, real porridge from porridge oats and various other mash-like meals into which I mixed the layer pellets or layers meals depending on what I had at the time. Porridge oats quickly became the clear favourite of our chickens that winter but come summer we discovered that we had spoiled our chickens as it turned out they wouldn't touch the pellets dry! Ever since, years later, our flock get freshly-made porridge every morning!
