Two years ago our wellie wearing family moved to the rolling wet hills of Mid Wales. We decided to grow our own fruit and veg, keep bees, poultry and build our own furniture with little or no experience.

This is our journey to the good life.

Our Green Ideas

With a growing number of eco-warriors around the UK we thought we'd explain our views and what drives us.

We love the planet and understand that if everyone had a zero carbon footprint, were enviromentally neutral and recycled everything then the World would be a better place. We also realised that with three kids, our own business to run and limited resources that this was unlikely to happen for us in a way that was realistic for our lifestyle.

So we decided we would simply do our best to avoid excessive waste, eat better tasting, less travelled food and keep a bit greener where we can without having a guilt complex if we can't.

The upshot is that we spend more time outside working as a family, our food tastes better, we save money and we get to try new things on a daily basis. There is a great sense of achievement in finding ways to improve your health and lifestyle when you eat one of your own carrots whilst sitting on a chair you have made yourself. Importantly for us our kids are learning the benefits of effort, patience, determination and knowing where their food comes from.

So wherever possible we:
- Eat our own fruit and veg
- Eat meat that comes from local producers which do not intensively rear their stock
- Eat eggs from our birds
- Recycle what we can
- Build our own furniture where time, skill and needs allow
- Keep bees
- Promote wildlife in our garden
- Make some our own cleaning products
- Choose environmentally friendly goods
